The Technical Lead – Mainframe Middleware provides expert technical leadership, guidance, and integration capabilities to ensure the reliable, secure, and efficient delivery of middleware services across the mainframe environment. The role leads a specialist team in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of middleware solutions, supporting business-critical services for NT Government agencies while ensuring compliance with standards, governance, and ITIL practices.
Requirements
What you'll do:
Lead and coordinate the Middleware team to deliver reliable integration services aligned with service expectations and business outcomes.
Manage BAU activities including incident, problem, service request, and change management, ensuring timely resolution and minimal operational impact.
Oversee change management processes, ensuring changes are assessed, approved, tested, and implemented in line with governance requirements.
Drive continual service improvement across middleware, including performance, stability, automation, and operational efficiency.
Provide expert technical advice to management and stakeholders on middleware operations, strategy, risks, and opportunities.
Build and maintain effective relationships with internal teams, vendors, and service providers to ensure collaboration and service delivery.
Maintain platform stability, security, and lifecycle management through patching, upgrades, and proactive monitoring.
Design, develop, and support secure integration solutions using IBM middleware technologies (e.g., MQ, Integration Bus, ACE).
Ensure effective monitoring, performance management, automation, and recovery capabilities for middleware services.
Lead resolution of complex technical issues across teams, vendors, and projects to maintain service reliability.
Develop and maintain operational standards, procedures, and documentation to support consistent delivery of middleware services.
Contribute to project delivery and service enhancements in alignment with enterprise architecture and organizational objectives.
Participate in on-call support and after-hours work as required to maintain critical service availability.
Plan, prioritise, and allocate team workloads effectively, supporting capability development and knowledge transfer.
Mentor staff, promote technical skill development, and support succession planning within the Middleware team.
What you'll bring:
Strong experience in enterprise middleware within a mainframe environment, including administration, monitoring, performance tuning, and recovery.
Expertise in SOA and integration using IBM technologies (MQ, Integration Bus, App Connect Enterprise/ACE or equivalent).
Proven experience managing complex message transport and transformation environments.
Solid understanding of ITIL practices, including incident, problem, change, and service level management.
Demonstrated ability to provide technical advice to management on middleware strategy, upgrades, and platform planning.
Experience leading technical teams, mentoring staff, and transferring specialist knowledge in enterprise ICT environments.
Capability to troubleshoot, resolve, and optimise complex technical incidents in a high-pressure environment.
Experience contributing to middleware-related projects, including planning, implementation, testing, and change/release enablement.
Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes collaboratively.
Ability to operate autonomously, take accountability for technical and service outcomes, and drive continual improvement.
Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, technologies, and relevant legislation.
