The Director of Enterprise Engineering will lead engineering strategy, delivery, and operations across three critical technology domains: Core Banking Platform Engineering, Mainframe Engineering, and Capital Markets Technology. This leader will shape the modernization agenda, driving reliable, scalable, and secure solutions that support the bank’s growth, regulatory responsibilities, and long-term technology transformation.
The ideal candidate brings deep engineering expertise, a strong understanding of financial services platforms, and a leadership approach that balances technical depth with operational discipline. This role is highly influential, interfacing regularly with senior technology and business leaders to ensure the bank’s most essential systems are stable, resilient, and evolving for the future.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Define and execute the multi-year engineering roadmap for the Core Banking Platform.
Execute on the established mainframe modernization roadmap and ensure delivery by the committed date.
Partner with Enterprise Architecture and business leaders to ensure engineering decisions align with business strategy, regulatory expectations, and operational resilience needs.
Drive modernization initiatives including cloud enablement, API-driven integration, automation, and legacy platform evolution.
Engineering Delivery & Execution
Lead teams responsible for designing, building, enhancing, and supporting core banking applications and services.
Oversee mainframe engineering (z/OS, COBOL, batch processing, payments pipelines, etc.) including performance optimization, resiliency engineering, and lifecycle management.
Direct engineering for Capital Markets applications, ensuring high availability, data accuracy, and strong controls.
Operational Excellence
Provide hands-on leadership during major incidents, core releases, production cutovers, and regulatory events.
Develop and maintain runbooks, capacity plans, disaster recovery strategies, and performance benchmarks.
Ensure full compliance with security standards, audit requirements, and financial-sector regulatory expectations.
People Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and grow high-performing engineering teams across core, mainframe, and capital markets domains.
Build an engineering culture rooted in accountability, quality, technical curiosity, and continuous improvement.
Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and resource planning for applications under your portfolio.
Qualifications
Required:
10+ years of engineering experience including leadership roles directing application/platform engineering teams.
Strong background in financial services, banking platforms, or other regulated, high-availability environments.
Demonstrated experience defining and delivering on a technology roadmap.
Proficient working with core banking systems, transaction processing systems, and mainframe based platforms.
Experience leading modernization initiatives, including cloud migrations, microservices, and API integration patterns.
Proven track record delivering complex, multi-stakeholder technology programs.
Ability to communicate clearly with senior executives, regulators, and cross-functional partners.
Plus:
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) experience.
Prior experience with platforms such as FIS, Fiserv, Temenos, Jack Henry, Hogan, or custom-built core systems.
Exposure to treasury or capital markets technology stacks (Murex, Calypso, QRM, Wall Street Systems, etc.).
Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, DevOps tooling, and observability frameworks.

This position is currently not eligible for employment visa sponsorship (e.g., H-1B visa). This includes, for example, situations where a candidate may have temporary work authorization while enrolled in school or upon graduation (e.g., CPT, OPT) but would need H-1B visa sponsorship within a few years of employment in order to maintain employment eligibility.
Work Location:
This position is fully in office (5 days a week) at the Zions Technology Center - 7860 South Bingham Junction Blvd, Midvale, UT 84047 or 1801 Main St, Houston, TX 77002.
